One of the most recent features added to lifescience.net is journal following. You can now choose from 50 top scientific journals and follow them to get journal content in your personal stream.
There are over a hundred thousands research articles published in scientific journals each month. Scientists mostly use established databases, such as PubMed, to search for literature that is relevant to them and their work. However, many are interested in scientific advances that go beyond their own field of work, especially if the impact of that research is high. We have now developed a tool that makes it easy to keep an overview of most important advancements in science.
We call this feature journal following.
Prior to this feature, Life Science Network registered members had the option to define their settings in a way that only content (news articles, jobs, events) matching their interests appeared in their stream. It was possible to follow people, topics and places, such as institutions, companies or research groups. Now scientific journals can be followed too.
If you follow a scientific journal, Nature for example, you will get titles of journal articles in your personal stream as they are published. Advanced online publications for some journals will be included as well – informing you of new publications even before they are indexed in PubMed.
If you follow more than one journal, the content of all journals will be aggregated in your stream and sorted by date.
Standard features are included in this new module too. You can always comment on the journal content, recommend it to your followers or bookmark it for later reading. However, reviews are not available. This feature remains associated with the Publications module only.
You can visit this link for the full list of available journals. Currently, there are 50, but if you write to [email protected] and request a particular journal be added, the chances are good we'll be able to do it.
Apart from the full list of journals, you can also visit the publisher's page to browse through their journals in a single list. For an example, visit Nature Publishing Group. Here you can also set up your following options more precisely, and choose to follow only advanced online publications, only content from the latest issue, or both.
Other changes
Other changes we recently introduced are related to the Stream and filtering of content based on type. You can use these filters to quickly check only the latest items of one particular type of content, for instance jobs, to make sure you didn't miss any among all the other content.
We also made design changes to the rating scales of publications and institutions. They are now easier to use, especially on mobile devices.
Coming up
We are currently working on aggregating scientific events. Over the next few weeks you will see more and more events appear on the site. As soon as we fully test this feature, we will explain it in a separate announcement.
As always, we appreciate your feedback. Let us know what you think about this feature by using the comment box below. If you prefer, you can also send us a message with your suggestions by email.
