Image 1 Laser excited fluorescence underpins several key DNA sequencing methods and Coherent supports these applications with our OBIS and Sapphire product lines. Together these lasers offer the industry’s broadest portfolio of compact CW lasers in terms of wavelengths, output power, and cost of ownership. With power mostly in the tens of milliwatts, OBIS are available at over 30 different wavelengths from 375 nm to 980 nm, whereas Sapphire offer power up to 500 mW and are currently offered at 9 visible wavelengths.
This product breadth is necessary because of the different proprietary methods and their associated fluorophores. And as the market for sequencing continues to expand for everything from personalized medicine to genealogy services, it is important to match the laser performance to the particular method: to minimize instrument costs and to optimize its performance. For example, the compact OBIS and its streamlined version – the OBIS Core – are a great match where footprint and thermal loading are critical. Conversely, the Sapphire series are ideal for methods using a wide detection field where power is important.
