Deng and colleagues developed stem cell-derived islets with controlled relative abundance of endocrine cell types, simultaneously possessing glucose-lowering and glucose-raising abilities. After reversal of hyperglycemia in diabetic mice recipients, these islets could sufficiently protect against hypoglycemia. They addressed a critical safety consideration in translating the therapeutic potential of SC-islets for diabetes.
