Content

Whitney et al. describe a previously unreported tropical peatland type from lowland Belize that contains Sphagnum moss in the understory. Peatlands are globally important ecosystems in terms of carbon storage and their unique biodiversity, and this study underscores our lack of fundamental knowledge of tropical peatland ecosystem composition and function.
