What is Life Science Network?

Life Science Network (LSN) is an internet platform for professional networking and sharing of knowledge in life sciences. It allows its members to create a profile and upload various types of content relevant to life sciences, for instance experimental protocols, publications or news.

Do I have to register to access information on LSN?

Most information visible to registered users is also visible to unregistered visitors. However, once registered, you will be able to post comments, recommend content (e.g. experimental protocols or news articles) and even rate scientific publications. You will get a profile which you can fill with information about you and your research, upload your publications, protocols and more.

How do I get my own personal profile?

You can register by filling a simple sign up form. After registration, you can create your personal profile by providing information that best describes you and your research.

How to create a page for an institute, company, department or group?

Once you signed up with LSN you will get a profile. On the Personal information page of your profile, you can add positions - information about locations (workplaces) where you used to work or where you are currently working. As you are adding your positions, you will be able to choose among institutes, companies, departments and groups already entered into the database, or add new ones. All institutions and organisational levels you enter will automatically have a page created and editing rights for those institutions and levels will be assigned to you. You can then go to About section of those institutions and levels, add information about them and define whether they are still active (existing) or not.

How do I add content to LSN?

News, protocols and publications can be added using forms accessible through your profile page. References and abstracts of research publications can be also imported from Pubmed.

Information about infrastructure can be entered using the forms accessible through About pages of the respective institutes, companies, their departments, groups etc.

Who will see the content I upload?

Uploaded content is visible to registered users as well as unregistered visitors.

Can I edit content on LSN?

Yes. You can edit or remove at any time all the content you originally uploaded or imported. Only institutions, organisational levels and items containing information imported from other databases, such as publication information imported from Pubmed, cannot be deleted directly, but upon request using the Report or request form.

Content uploaded by other users cannot be changed directly. In those cases you can contact the user with editing rights, request editing rights for yourself using the Report or request form or send us a message using the same form and tell us which content you wish changed or removed and why.

Why is content that used to be visible suddenly unavailable?

Since users can always edit or remove content they uploaded, for instance an experimental protocol, you may find yourself in a situation that certain content suddenly disappears from your lists. We therefore recommend all our users to create personal backup copies of all information in the network that is critical for their work.

How can I make content appear on the page of my institute, company, department or group?

If you are author of the content (e.g. an experimental protocol or publication), simply choose the position where you work(ed) when the content was created using the Author settings button. Now you can access the content through the page of the institute, department and group you linked it to. Keep in mind, you can only connect content to locations which you defined as places where you work(ed) through Positions form of your Personal information.

What if my group belongs to two different departments?

LSN allows you to create relations between different organisational levels. On the About page of any department or group you will find a link Add structure relation. There you can define if two groups listed under different departments are actually the same group. Once you do that, content listed on each of these group pages (publications, protocols, news) will be the same, regardless if the group is accessed through one department or the other.

What happens with the content linked to my group's page after my group moves to another department or institute?

If you need to create a new group page in another location (different institute or department), simply define the appropriate relation to the old group using the Add structure relation form on About page of your new group. All the content of the old group will now appear also on your new group page (all protocols, publications and news, but not information on the About page).

What is the connection between Life Science Network and related platforms?

All these applications share some resources, which is why you only have to register once and can use those credentials to sign in to all the platforms. Also, changing the sign in credentials, for instance your password, will affect how you sign in on all sites.
