Hi! I use a solution of Lime Sulphur (Lime Sulfur) diluted with water to oxidise silver and copper for jewellery. This has been a method that I was shown years ago, and is very common in the jewellery industry. However, there's no real information about how to dispose of the solution safely.
Reading all the SDS on the material has not answered this question. Google has also not answered this question. I am hoping that someone here has chemical knowledge of this material, and how it breaks down.
I use approximately 5-10 drops of lime sulphur in about 250ml of hot water.
This is used immediately for the patination process and then is left to cool. It will continue to work for a short time, but after a couple of hours it usually is weakened (though not weakened in yellow colour) as it does not perform the same as when it's first mixed.
I have developed a system of storing the used solution in a plastic bottle for a number of days until the solution goes clear. When it becomes clear it has lost its ability to oxidise metal - so I have been assuming (hoping) that means that the lime and the sulphur have degraded and it should be less toxic for disposal into soil or into a sewer system.
Can anyone advise me on what might be happening here?
I have also read (but only on one SDS sheet) that hydrogen peroxide can be used to help clean up small spills.
