Gaza is a preventable human-made humanitarian catastrophe of exceptional scale and duration. Hamas' Oct 7, 2023, attacks on Israeli civilians killed approximately 1200 people and at least 250 people were taken hostage.1 The ensuing campaign by the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israel Defense Forces has destroyed civilian life in Gaza after decades of blockade, recurrent violence, and repeated assaults on health care.1,2 As of Aug 21, 2025, Gaza's Ministry of Health reported 62 895 Palestinians killed and 158 927 injured since Oct 7, 2023;3 independent estimates are higher.
