Young people are invited to discover the wonder of proteins with a new science and art initiative from EMBL
Unfold Your World is a new science and art project for 14-18-year-olds, just launched by EMBL (the European Molecular Biology Laboratory).
The project encourages young people to reflect on the beauty of protein structures, discover the important role proteins play in our bodies and nature, and create artworks based on their insights.
Young people from across Europe and the UK are invited to submit an artwork, with dozens of prizes worth EUR100 to be won. All submissions will be shown in an online gallery, while selected art is set to be displayed in a special exhibition at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany.
It’s the first time EMBL has rolled out an educational outreach initiative on this scale. The project builds on an existing protein art initiative led by EMBL's Protein Data Bank Europe team.
Any young person can take part, with the support of a school, youth group or other institution. Learning materials and tutorials are available via the Unfold Your World website, which also hosts the portal for submitting artwork. All resources are suitable for use in the classroom or by individuals. Drop-in tutorial sessions will also be offered via Zoom in May, June and July.
The deadline for artwork submissions is 31 August 2024, with the exhibition of artworks planned for autumn/winter.
