The demand for photonic solutions in life sciences is stronger than ever. The major driver is health care. Researchers are making revolutionary advances in the detailed understanding of disease causes, treatments, and outcomes – witness the recent announcement of the first pharma product to demonstrate some (albeit minor) efficacy in treating Alzheimer’s symptoms. Understanding the genetic basis for diseases is opening pathways not just to treatment, but also to prevention. And with the backdrop of a graying population demographic, there is a strong need to increase the efficiency of healthcare budgets, including a better emphasis on preventative care. This all converges in the form of “personalized medicine.”
Personalized medicine is based on a foundation of increased analytical data: better, more detailed data, and the use of AI to fully exploit that data. Many of the analytical tools – sequencing, cytometry, etc. – critically depend on photonic methods to attain the necessary speed and parallelism.
