“We all become monsters when History gives us the opportunity”, writes Olivier Norek in his novel about migrants and traffickers, Between Two Worlds. One of the malicious absurdities about political and public anger surrounding migration is that human mobility has long been wired into who we are. People who wish to “stop the boats” deny a fundamental characteristic of our species. Ancestor human populations migrated out of Africa, interbreeding with Neanderthals in the Middle East and Denisovans in southeast Asia.
