August saw the 80th anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, one of the last major anniversaries at which witnesses of the bombings will be present. As that generation passes, we lose the first-hand testimony of people who speak not in the jargon of international geopolitics, but speak instead of a flash of the whitest light ever seen, of splintered wood and broken glass, of a child buried under rubble crying “Mother, help me!”, of an eerie twilight and a tremendous firestorm, of a man bringing water to huddled victims, of horrific burns, strange wounds that will not heal, and many deaths.
